Mackinac MSCI Spring Invitational Events
Impromptu Movie Quotes (6 minutes)-Impromptu event in which a series of three different quotes will be provided, and one will be chosen to address. Speeches should address the quote intellectually by evaluating its meaning within the context of the film and analyzing/evaluating its larger significance. All quotes will be taken from full-length Disney Pixar films. *Limit of 3 competitors per school.
After Dinner Speaking (5-8 minutes)-ADS speeches are original speeches that utilize humor in order to inform, persuade, and entertain an audience on a given topic. No Visual Aids are permitted.
Duo Pocket Sales (5-8 minutes)-This event is a hybrid of both Duo interpretation and Sales public address. Performers will present an original sales piece with relatively equal contribution from both members. Visual aids should be compact and able to fit on the person. All MIFA rules for Sales and Duo apply.
Storytelling (5-8 minutes)-Traditional Storytelling event following MIFA rules and guidelines.
Program Oral Interpretation (POI) (5-8 minutes)-Using selections from Prose, Poetry, and Drama students create a performance around a central theme or idea. Program Oral Interpretation is designed to test a performer’s ability to inter-splice multiple types of literature into a single, cohesive performance.
Dramatic Interpretation: Character Study (5-8 minutes)-Contestants present a cutting, which represents one character. The selection can be one from a continuous monologue or from a splicing of dialogue that is presented by one character. Performers are only allowed to perform in one character voice, even if the piece specifies that one performer plays multiple roles in the particular text. The contestant is encouraged to create environment, tension, and atmosphere within the presentation of the material.
Mini-Multiple: Oscar Nominated Films (7-10 minutes)-Performances will only interpret films that have been nominated for an Academy Award in any category. The movie does NOT need to be G rated; however, all content (including original transitions, introductions and conclusions) and physical actions should be G-rated and may be compiled from any combination of Oscar nominated films. Performances should have 3-5 participants. All other MIFA rules apply.
Public Forum Debate-A team style of debate in which two teams consisting of two members will argue from either a pro or con position (depending on a coin flip) on a nationally prescribed resolution. Each member actively participates within the debate taking turns debating the topic and arguments presented as well as engaging in cross-examination periods. Successful PF debaters must make persuasive and logical arguments in a manner that is accessible to a wide variety of audiences.
